The Department of Linguistics has an international reputation and is particularly strong in the areas of second language acquisition, applied linguistics, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and sociolinguistics. Like every major linguistics program in the United States, the department is centrally concerned with core areas of linguistic theory, but it is unusual in that it also attaches equal importance to applied and descriptive endeavors.
Undergraduate ProgramsSearch for the unconscious knowledge that humans have about language and how children acquire it, understand the structure of language in general, how language influences the way we interact with each other.
Graduate ProgramsInvestigate how people who speak different dialects of the same language make judgments about each others’ personality, intellect, or social status.
Engage in the specialties of phonetics/phonology, second language acquisition, sociolinguistics, Hispanic linguistics, and Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
